We’re excited to introduce our new augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) lending library at the Child Development Centre! We have named this the 'Communication Corner Lending Library'. The lending library was made possible by a generous donation from Casino Mining.
This lending library was created to support children and families as they explore and grow in their communication journeys. The library will provide short-term access to AAC tools to gather trial data, support assessment and inform funding decisions for families while they are waiting for their own tools.
AAC is a fundamental human right for children with complex communication needs, ensuring they can express themselves, connect with others, and participate in society. AAC covers any non-verbal method, including low-tech boards and high-tech devices. It does not hinder, but rather supports, language development, giving children a crucial voice regardless of their verbal abilities.
The library includes a variety of tools available to trial at home:
- low-tech supports such as core vocabulary boards, choice cards, and visual communication systems
- adaptive switches
- switch-adapted toys
- mounting devices
- iPads with AAC apps
- switch interfaces that can connect multiple switches or link to a computer
Every child communicates differently, and finding the right tools can take time. Our lending library gives families the opportunity to try different options in real-life settings, helping them discover what works best before making longer-term decisions.
We’re looking forward to seeing how these tools open up new ways for children to interact, play, and express themselves.
